Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
