At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
